Penn State Basketball’s bad month, who Micah Shrewsberry can target
By Evan Smith
Micah Shrewsberry and the Penn State Basketball program had a rough few weeks.
First, Izaiah Brockington, after committing to Shrewsberry, changed his mind and entered the transfor portal (eventually settling on Iowa State). Then, former Penn State Basketball legend, and all-time leading scorer, Talor Battle announced he was taking a coaching position at Northwestern … After Penn State announced he was staying with Penn State and Shrewsberry. And just this week, rising sophomore Abdou Tsimbila announced he was entering the transfer portal.
No rational fan expected a new regime to keep every player, and the new staff has done a nice job keeping 4 star recruit Seth Lundy in house and convincing John Harrar to spend his “bonus” year in Happy Valley.
But, a month ago that sentence would have included keeping Brockington, keeping Tsimbila, keeping D.J. Gordon (who also entered the portal recently) … And there was hope Talor Battle could convince his brother Boo Buie to transfer here from Northwestern.
Instead, the inverse has happened.
Adding in the (rather expected) losses of Jamari Wheeler to Ohio State and Myreon Jones to Florida (along with Buttrick to UMass), well it’s safe to say there are real concerns here a “Transfer Valley”. The coaching staff has signed three incoming transfers, including the highly rated Jalen Pickett) but here are the list of schools those three recruits are coming from:
- Gardner Webb
- Siena
- Spring Hills (Junior Colloege)
Not exactly a list of college basketball elite.
While Penn State Basketball continues to push Shrewsberry’s NBA Coaching experience (did you know the ‘Conference Finals’ had their own logo before seeing this graphic?), the lack of power-five school transfers is starting to become a concern.
With front court depth becoing even more of a liability, how has this coaching staff not been able to secure the committment of FORMER SHREWSBERRY CENTER Emmanual Dowuona from Purdue? Sigh …
Here are three targets we recommend Micah Shrewsberry aggressively pursue to fill the 2021-2022 Penn State Basketball roster.
