Joey Porter Jr. gets his first career interception

Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. surprised some fans when he was named a starting cornerback going into Week 1 this season.

Porter Jr. is not surprising anyone anymore, as he has been one of the defense’s best player each week.

He’s stepped up as the No.1 guy the last five weeks with senior corner Tariq Castro-Fields out due to injury.

The redshirt freshman was awarded Big Ten Freshman of the week honors back in week seven for his performance against Rutgers. For the year, Porter has 34 total tackles, a sack and four pass breakups, but one stat has eluded him to this point; an interception.

Illinois quarterbacks have only combined to throw three interceptions this season so they have done a good job of protecting the ball. The Illini have played four quarterbacks this season so it is yet to be seen who will take the majority of the snaps Saturday.

However, this is the week Porter Jr. gets his first career interception.
