Penn State hopes to steal 4-star RB from South Carolina despite in-state ties

Class of 2027 prospect announced his top five teams.

Penn State football earned a spot on a four-star running back's top five and lined up an official visit with a the young Class of 2027 rusher following a spring visit.

Rivals announced Aiden Gibson's list on April 14, which includes the Nittany Lions, Louisville, North Carolina, Rutgers, and South Carolina. The blue and white do not have a running back committed from the Class of 2027 as of Wednesday. Their only players on the offensive side of the ball are four-stars, wide receiver Landon Blum and tight end Cooper Terwilliger.

Gibson is a four-star running back ranked No. 322 nationally, No. 23 at his position, and No. 7 from South Carolina, per 247Sports Composite rankings. Rivals Industry Ranking has the Woodruff, S.C. native ranked No. 347 nationally, No. 28 among running backs, and No. 7 from his state.

While South Carolina is not a huge favorite in this recruitment battle, the in-state ties still push it over the edge early on. Rivals has the Gamecocks with a 34.4 percent chance of landing Gibson with Rutgers, Virginia Tech, and Penn State above an above 10 percent chance.

Gibson has official visits lined up with all but one of his top five teams. He visits the Nittany Lions right in the middle. He's scheduled to visit the Scarlet Knights first on May 29 followed by South Carolina the week after. Gibson will be in Happy Valley over the weekend of June 12 before he wraps up his visit tour with North Carolina and the Hokies. He has yet to pencil in an official visit with Louisville.

Out of his top teams, the Gamecocks last hosted Gibson on two unofficial visits on Aug. 31, 2025 and Sept. 6, 2025. On April 4, he was at State College on an unofficial, spring practice visit.

In 2025, Gibson had 205 carries for 1,611 yards and 21 touchdowns. He added 24 catches for 387 yards and four receiving scores as well for the Woodruff High School Wolverines.
