Drew Allar takes pre-draft visit to dream landing spot, at least for some Penn State fans

Drew Allar is viewed as a late-round flyer in the 2026 NFL Draft, and his best path to a starting job might be in Pittsburgh.

It’s not exactly split down the middle, but it’s fair to suggest that most of the Penn State fans from the eastern side of Pennsylvania are Philadelphia Eagles fans while the majority on the western side cheer for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sundays.

It’s not fair to suggest that all of those fans believe in Drew Allar’s NFL potential, but those Penn State fans in the Venn diagram of Allar believers and Steelers supporters have to be excited about the news of Allar’s pre-draft visit to Pittsburgh on Wednesday morning.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Allar is one of the latest QB prospects to take a 30-visit with the Steelers, who are still awaiting a decision from 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is still undecided on playing another season and joining his former Green Bay Packers head coach, Mike McCarthy, who took over in his hometown this offseason.

The Steelers previously met with Allar formally at the NFL Draft Combine before this trip to the facility in the South Side of Pittsburgh. Carson Beck is the only other QB prospect to get both visits with the Steelers, but North Dakota State QB Cole Payton and Arkansas QB Taylen Green have both been on 30 visits.

That’s to say that Pittsburgh’s interest in a late-round QB, which Allar projects to be, shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s also worth noting because this visit does not mean it’s preordained that Allar is heading to the Steelers in the 2026 NFL Draft. Still, it increases the chances, and whatever the fanbase thinks, it would be a good fit for Allar.

Former Ohio State QB Will Howard is already in Pittsburgh, but he didn’t see any game action as a rookie after he was selected in the sixth round last year. If Rodgers opts to retire, that would open up a QB battle between Howard and whoever Pittsburgh drafts. If that is Allar, while he lost the head-to-head duel to Howard’s Buckeyes in the 2024 season, he clearly has the better physical tools and presumably, more NFL upside.

As a big-bodied pocket passer, Allar is the type of quarterback McCarthy has long favored throughout his career as an NFL head coach. His West Coast-inspired offense needs a QB who can effectively operate from the pocket, and while Allar’s ability to do that consistently right now is in question, if he reaches his ceiling, he’ll fit that profile.

Allar has a long way to go wherever he ends up. But if that’s Pittsburgh, it’s his best chance to start games next season, and the Penn State-Steelers fans will be pining for it from the moment his name is read at the draft in Pittsburgh.
