Penn State football didn't get any immediate commitments following its busiest official visit weekend from the seven who remain uncommitted, but the Nittany Lions made significant progress with one nearly necessary target.

Four-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor was previously committed to Penn State under now Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin. Very soon after head coach Matt Campbell was hired, the Nittany Lions re-offered him and have pursued him hard ever since.

Penn State's recruitment class this cycle isn't loaded with in-state talent. Four of Campbell's 20 commits are from Pennsylvania, and only one of them is a blue-chip recruit — four-star defensive lineman Stanley Montgomery.

Taylor is a Gibsonia, Pa. native who attends Pine-Richland High School. The four-star wideout is ranked No. 77 nationally and No. 33 in his position, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. He's also the No. 4 prospect from Pennsylvania.

On Sunday, 247Sports national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn logged an expert prediction in favor of the Nittany Lions landing Taylor. On3 vice president of recruiting and Transfer Portal also submitted a prediction for the wideout to commit to Penn State. Rivals currently has the blue and white with an 86.8 percent chance to land Taylor.

Other schools in the mix for Taylor are Nebraska and Alabama. He had official visits scheduled with both teams and was also on an official visit with Colorado in mid-May. Taylor reportedly canceled his remaining visits with the Cornhuskers and Crimson Tide on Sunday.

The wide receiver is a can't miss prospect on Penn State's board.

Despite having visited the Buffaloes, Taylor canceling his trips to Lincoln, Neb. and Tuscaloosa, Ala. is as close to a commitment Campbell can get without having one.

There are a lot of question marks and unknowns about the Nittany Lions' wide receiver room. In 2026 at least, they'll have redshirt senior Chase Sowell and junior Brett Eskildsen to rely on while testing what returning wideout, sophomore Koby Howard, can bring to the team after seeing minimal game time as a true freshman.

There's hope for what will come out of that room, but Campbell still needs to actively build that room in the coming recruitment classes. That starts with the Class of 2027.

Four-stars Landon Blum and Jamir Dean are the only two wide receivers in this class so far, and Penn State might not hold onto Dean for much longer if Georgia successfully manages a flip. Both commits were on official visits over the weekend. The Nittany Lions also hosted four-star Deshawn Hall.

Unlike Taylor, Hall has a few options in his mind with Tennessee, Alabama, and Auburn on his list. Penn State has the best chance of landing Taylor over Hall, and it will likely gets its answer from the former sooner.

Blum is more locked in with the Nittany Lions than Dean, but Campbell needs more than two wide receivers in this cycle. Taylor is the perfect start in ensuring he reaches the bare minimum; retaining Dean or landing Hall is the next thing on Penn State's to-do list.
