Penn State football is on the brink of pulling off a major upset versus SEC teams for a four-star running back.
Top Penn State 4-star quarterback target prepares for Elite 11 Finals
Aiden Gibson, a South Carolina native, has three SEC teams in the mix alongside the Nittany Lions: Tennessee, South Carolina, and Florida. Penn State isn't a hot spot for recruits from the South, especially the Southeast. The SEC pulls these prospects in one after another.
For Gibson, though, the Nittany Lions are leading the pack in his recruitment.
On Tuesday, May 5, Tyler Calvaruso of 247Sports logged an expert prediction in favor of the blue and white. This comes six days after national recruiting analyst Brian Dohn recorded his prediction for Penn State to land Gibson's commitment.
Gibson is the No. 322 recruit nationally and ranked 22nd among running backs from the Class of 2027. He's also listed by 247Sports Composite rankings as the No. 8 recruit from South Carolina.
Pulling Gibson away from SEC programs is a huge win for head coach Matt Campbell.
Five-star rusher Kemon Spell from the Class of 2027 left the Nittany Lions in the dust when announcing his commitment to Georgia. Spell is a Pennsylvania native, so that was considered a major loss for Penn State, losing an in-state recruit to an SEC team.
Gibson has a handful of official visits lined up. He's scheduled to visit Rutgers (May 29), South Carolina (June 5), Penn State (June 12), North Carolina (June 19), and Virginia Tech (June 19) so far.
He visited Happy Valley on an unofficial visit on April 4 for a spring practice. These unofficial visits have been extremely helpful for Campbell in recruiting. The culture, practice regime, and reps that younger players got during the season spoke volumes to many recruits.
The Nittany Lions currently have the No. 6 overall recruiting class, which includes four four-star prospects: defensive lineman Stanley Montgomery, cornerback Kei'Shjuan Telfair, wide receiver Landom Blum, and tight end Cooper Terwilliger. Penn State has yet to land a running back in the class, making Gibson a prime target for Campbell and his staff.
