Penn State football landed a likely commitment on Friday, May 22. Three-star tight end Sean Currie announced his decision in the afternoon on the Rivals Recruiting Youtube.

He chose the Nittany Lions over Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, and Ohio State.

“No matter where you go, even outside of Pennsylvania, you run into these Penn State fans,” Currie told Rivals. “It’s something crazy to think about now that I’m going to play for them, that type of team and program. The history behind it, it’s a blessing.”

Per Rivals industry rankings, Currie is the No. 514 overall Class of 2027 recruit and No. 28 tight end. The New Jersey native is also ranked 13th from his state. His 247Sports Composite rankings placement is similar at No. 560, No. 32, and No. 15, respectively.

Penn State was favored to land Currie with expert predictions filing in close to his commitment date. Tyler Calvaruso of 247Sports was the latest to submit a prediction for the former Virginia commit on May 21, falling in line Brian Dohn's Nittany Lion prediction from the day before.

Ahead of his commitment, Currie had official visits lined up with three schools. He's scheduled to be in Happy Valley over the weekend of June 19 and was originally slated to visit the Buckeyes and Aggies before on May 29 and June 5, respectively.

Currie marks head coach Matt Campbell's fifth New Jersey commit. On offense, specifically, he landed three-star running back Chukwuma Odoh from Paramus. N.J. while the other three commits from the state are on the defensive side of the ball.

In the tight end room, Currie joins four-star Cooper Terwilliger. The South Dakota native committed to Penn State on April 13 and the Nittany Lions have been relatively quiet in that position room since. Past the 2026 season with Campbell's Iowa State transfers who will run out of NCAA eligibility, Benjamin Brahmer and Gabe Burkle, the TEU identity in Happy Valley needs to be upheld. With a lack of top tight end targets in the Class of 2027, the addition of Currie is essential to that goal.

“On top of that just having Coach [Taylor] Mouser he just won Tight Ends Coach of the Year and going to a college known for being Tight End U. The tight ends he’s able to get now and what he’ll be able to do with is unreal and something I want to be part of," Currie told Rivals. "He’s also the OC as well. You don’t find that everywhere, having your tight ends coach coach being your offensive coordinator. Him and I talked about it and he said ‘in big-game situations I trust my tight end to make a big play’ and that’s another thing I want to be part of.”

The rising high school senior is focusing exclusively on football once he gets to college. He was initially planning to play football and lacrosse, but following his decommitment from Virginia in March, his plans shifted.

At 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds, Currie has weight to add, but with that being the primary "concern," he brings technique and a skill set that's valuable to Campbell's squad. Currie's height, as well, is essential as both Brahmer and Burkle graduating leaves Campbell with a 6-foot-3 to 6-foot-5 tight end room, including Terwilliger, in 2027. His lacrosse background supports his footwork on the field, which Campbell can help translate into an improved vertical game.
