Penn State is off to a strong start in the 2027 recruiting class, and that’s expected to continue into Memorial Day weekend ahead of the first wave of official visitors heading to Happy Valley in June. Matt Campbell already has 18 commits in the class, and all signs point to 3-star tight end Sean Currie becoming No. 19.

Currie is set to announce his commitment on the Rivals Recruiting YouTube on Friday at 2:10 p.m. ET, and is heavily favored to Penn State. Rivals recruiting experts Steve Wiltfong and Blue White Illustrated’s Ryan Snyder have both logged predictions for Currie to commit to Penn State, and the Trenton, New Jersey product has two crystal ball predictions from 247Sports’s Brian Dohn and Lions247’s Tyler Calvaruso.

Penn State heavily favored to land Sean Currie

According to Rivals industry rankings, Currie is the 514th-ranked player in the 2027 class and the 28th-ranked tight end. At 6-foot-7 and 235 pounds, he has tremendous upside as an in-line tight end and a big-bodied pass catcher, though he primarily worked from the slot for The Lawrenceville School.

Currie is scheduled to take an official visit to Happy Valley on June 19. He also has visits scheduled for Ohio State and Texas A&M, while Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt are also factoring into his decision as a finalist. All the momentum is with Campbell and his staff on this one, and while the rankings may not indicate it, he’s a crucial addition.

So far in the 2027 class, Campbell has landed commitments from four recruits from New Jersey. Currie would become the fifth. New Jersey has long been a critical recruiting territory for Penn State, and it seems that Campbell has quickly locked it down after taking over for James Franklin.

With Franklin at Virginia Tech, Virginia is more hotly contested than at any point during his tenure in Happy Valley, and Maryland will be up for grabs as well. Even Pennsylvania appears to be under siege, with top recruits Kemon Spell and Maxwell Hiller heading to the SEC. That makes New Jersey an even more crucial pipeline for Campbell, and he’s tapped it well. Currie is the 13th-ranked player in the state by Rivals Industry, and defensive line commit Carter Blattner is ranked No. 10.

Then there’s the issue of keeping Penn State’s status as TEU in college football. Four-star Cooper Terwilliger has already committed to the Nittany Lions, but Currie would be an important addition to a tight end room that will graduate Iowa State transfers Benjamin Brahmer and Gabe Burkle.

Currie has serious gravity working up the seams and winning on fades and corner routes. While he doesn’t showcase much as a vertical athlete, he’s smooth at the catch-point and tough to bring down with the ball in his hands. He’s also a high-level lacrosse player, and you can see it in his movement and footwork. As he focuses purely on football and adds weight and strength, his upward trajectory will be intriguing to monitor.
