Delayed 4-star Khalil Taylor commitment could give Penn State false hope

Penn State football is still waiting on four-star Khalil Taylor's decision.

Following his official visit over the weekend of June 5-7, the Nittany Lions had confidence that a commitment in their favor was on the horizon. Taylor canceled his remaining visits, which were with Nebraska and Alabama. That confidence didn't last very long, and neither did those cancelations.

Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule made a huge push with Taylor after experts favored Penn State to finally land him once again. The wideout was previously committed to the blue and white under former head coach James Franklin. Ever since head coach Matt Campbell was hired, Taylor has leaned towards the Nittany Lions.

Nebraska got another official visit in the books. Taylor also teased his favoritism switching to the Cornhuskers a couple days before the visit, and experts flipped their predictions for the 2027 pass catcher as well after that weekend.

Campbell knew he'd have to wait a bit longer than he wanted to, especially with Nebraska back in the mix. Taylor confirmed that his commitment date was July 6. Leading up to the day, it was expected for him to announce his decision at noon.

Like many other things in Taylor's recruitment, that changed as well.

Four-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor delays commitment to 6 p.m. ET on July 6

Rivals posted just before 1 p.m. ET on Monday that Taylor's commitment was delayed. His decision will now be announced at 6 p.m. ET on July 6 instead.

This could mean nothing, of course. Schedule-wise for both Taylor and Rivals could have caused this change, but it's hard not to go down the rabbit hole of possibilities for hopeful Penn State fans.

Just as Rhule made one last push for Taylor, which seemed to pan out in the Cornhuskers' favor, Campbell isn't going down without a fight. It's possible that a series of final pitches to keep Taylor in Pennsylvania could've — at the very least — given the wide receiver something to seriously think about enough to want to spend a few more hours thinking about his decision.

Knowing Taylor is more likely now to choose Nebraska, there's no better time for the Nittany Lions to put everything out on the table than the day of at the last minute.

Quite frankly, Penn State can't afford to do anything but that. With just one wideout committed in this cycle (four-star Landon Blum), Campbell's falling into the same sticky situation at this position that Franklin had. Landing Taylor is just one step closer to staying afloat for now.

By the time the evening rolls around, though, it will likely still end up with Taylor committing to Nebraska. Colorado hasn't been a serious contender in the picture, even after having an official visit with the Buffaloes the week before he was in Happy Valley. Campbell's just doing everything he can to keep the Nittany Lions as a legitimate option for the 2027 wide receiver.
