Class of 2027 recruiting has taken a toll on Penn State football. The Nittany Lions had one of the better recruitment classes in the country before official visit season, but prospects and commits alike slowly gave up on the blue and white.
The most recent heartbreaker was four-star wide receiver Deshawn Hall who committed to Auburn on Tuesday. Between losing Hall and suffering a flipped commitment from four-star Jamir Dean, Penn State's wideout situation looked like it couldn't get any bleaker.
To head coach Matt Campbell's demise, though, it just did.
Four-star Khalil Taylor is the Nittany Lions' only hope at landing another touted wide receiver. He's a Pennsylvania native who was initially committed to Penn State under former head coach James Franklin, but has kept the blue and white high on his list since giving Campbell a shot.
Taylor is ranked No. 87 nationally and No. 15 at wide receiver, according to Rivals Industry Ratings. He's a consensus four-star prospect and a top 20 wideout across the three outlets, Rivals, ESPN, and 247Sports.
On my way to the Opening. But before I go, just want to remind @HuskerFootball nation we have a few pieces left on the board we gotta get. None bigger than @KhalilTaylor08. Make sure he knows where home is as we wait for his July 6th announcement #GBR pic.twitter.com/WPkBs7zjX5

After his June 5-7 official visit in Happy Valley, it was only a matter of time before Taylor was expected to pull the trigger on his commitment and pledge to Penn State.
Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule threw a wrench in that plan.
Taylor rescheduled his official visit with the Cornhuskers after he canceled his remaining visits following his time with the Nittany Lions.
Over the last official visit weekend, the wideout was in Lincoln and sent a worrisome message to Campbell and Penn State. Taylor teased a Nebraska commitment, pointing towards his strong connection he built with four-star quarterback Trae Taylor who has been committed to the Cornhuskers since May 1, 2025.
Experts predict four-star wide receiver Khalil Taylor commits to Nebraska on July 6
Things got even sketchier surrounding Taylor's recruitment on Wednesday. Steve Wiltfong and Tim Verghese logged expert predictions in favor of Nebraska landing the 2027 wide receiver over the Nittany Lions.
It took one last push from Rhule to seriously sway Taylor's mind. While his commitment date is still slated for July 6, which gives Penn State a decent amount of time to do damage control, this is absolute worst case scenario for Campbell.
Whiffing on three blue-chip wideouts, including Dean, is a horrible look for the Nittany Lions. They also have only one wide receiver committed in their class with four-star Landon Blum, which certainly isn't enough for a position room that has consistently lacked depth and production year after year.
Taylor has been a "must have" prospect in this class, even before Dean's flip and Hall's commitment. In-state talent is always a priority, and Campbell hasn't done well keeping those recruits in Pennsylvania with this class. Knowing Taylor is on the brink of joining the others who passed on Penn State already rubs salt in the wound before he makes his commitment official.
