Penn State Football added another significant piece to its 2023 recruiting class on Friday morning

It was a happy Friday morning in Happy Valley with 4-star LB Kaveion Keys committing to Penn State football.

The Virginia recruit decommitted from North Carolina last week and didn’t waste much time finding his new home with the early signing period less than a week away.

The Nittany Lions were major players in Keys’ recruitment over the summer, receiving an official visit from him. While Penn State gave its best shot, Keys eventually picked North Carolina in August.

Victory Bell Rings identified Keys as a possible flip candidate because of how bad North Carolina’s defense was this year and the emergence of true freshman Abdul Carter at linebacker for the Nittany Lions. Carter’s play as a true freshman is a great selling point to any recruit trying to see early playing time.

Keys is listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds. He is rated as the No. 21 linebacker in the 247 Sports Composite rankings. 247 Sports itself is a bit higher on Keys, ranking him as the No. 15 linebacker in the country. His other offers included Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.

With Keys in the fold, Penn State Football now has commitments from six of the top eleven recruits in the state of Virginia for the 2023 class. The Nittany Lions took full advantage of the fact that both Virginia and Virginia Tech had new head coaches this season and thus didn’t have strong relationships with recruits.

Keys is commit No. 22for Penn State in this class. He is the third commit this week, joining 3-star DEs Joseph Mupoyi and Mason Robinson. The Nittany Lions now have the No. 12 class in the national recruiting rankings.

Some work still remains before this class is complete, but this class has been a great complement to the loaded 2022 class.
