Penn State Football: What numbers will new Nittany Lions be wearing?
Penn State football released the jersey numbers for freshmen who enrolled early and transfers on Sunday afternoon.
Penn State Football’s 2022 recruiting class is one of the more heralded in program history, and now those promising incoming freshmen know what jersey number they’ll be wearing.
Freshman quarterback Drew Allar will wear No. 15 for the Nittany Lions. Allar had worn No. 14 in high school, but that is the number of returning starting quarterback Sean Clifford.
Meanwhile, fellow freshman quarterback Beau Pribula will wear a number that is close to hearts of Penn State Football fans, No. 9. The number was made famous by Trace McSorley, who quarterbacked the Nittany Lions from 2016 to 2018.
Christian Veilleux wore No. 9 last year, but his high school number, No. 11, is now available and he is expected to take that. Pribula’s number is ironic, as he has drawn comparisons to McSorley.
Western Kentucky transfer wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley is taking an interesting number, No. 5. This number was just worn by star wide receiver Jahan Dotson, who is off to the NFL. Penn State’s all-time receptions leader, DaeSean Hamilton, wore No. 5 before Dotson as well. Tinsley definitely has some big shoes to fill here.
Freshman tight end Jerry Cross will also be filling some big shoes, as he will wear No. 88. This number was last worn by tight end Mike Gesicki, who graduated after the 2017 season and is now enjoying a successful career with the Miami Dolphins.
Freshman running back, and Gatorade National Player of the Year, Nick Singleton will wear No. 10 at Penn State. The most notable Nittany Lion to wear this number is Bobby Engram, who holds the program record for receiving yards. Expect to see a lot of No. 10 jerseys in the coming years in the crowd at Beaver Stadium.
Fellow freshman running back Kaytron Allen will wear No. 13 in the blue and white, while 2022 class leader, wide receiver Kaden Saunders will rep No. 7. Speedy freshman wide out Omari Evans is taking No. 18, the most recent and notable Penn State offensive player to wear No. 18 was Jesse James.
Freshman defensive lineman Zane Durant will be No. 28, last worn by defense end Odafe (Jayson) Oweh. Rounding out the group is JUCO offensive lineman JB Nelson, who is taking No. 55.
The rest of the 2022 recruiting class will receive their numbers when they arrive on campus over the Summer. Cornell transfer Hunter Nourzad will also receive his number then. It will be interesting to see what number 5-star defensive lineman Dani Dennis-Sutton receives.
