Cavaliers sign Penn State Basketball alum Lamar Stevens to multi-year deal
By Evan Smith
Former Penn State Basketball standout Lamar Stevens has signed a multi-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Stevens went undrafted but was signed to a two-way contract by the Cavaliers last summer.
The “two-way contract” is designed to have the opportunity for players to participate in both the NBA and the G-League, the NBA’s developmental league. But now that Lamar Stevens has signed a four year contract with the Cavaliers, it is his first full-time NBA contract.
Sources are saying it’s a four year deal, non guaranteed for the first three years, and a team option for the fourth.
Lamar Stevens has performed admirably in limited minutes for the Cavaliers as a rookie.
Stevens is averaging 4.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, .6 assists and is shooting 45.2% from the field. He’s played excellent defensively, including one game vs the Philadelphia 76ers where he was brought in during overtime to defend All-Star Ben Simmons.
His one limitation is three point shooting, where he must improve from his current 16.0%. But, by signing him to this contract, the Cavaliers are stating their belief he will be an important role player moving forward.
If Stevens’ three-point shooting can improve, his versatility driving and athleticism on both ends of the floor could lead to a nice NBA career. Remember, he already has one game-winning dunk in his first season so who know’s what’s next for Lamar as he continues his #climb in the National Basketball Association.
