Red Zone debacle

Penn State football made five trips inside the Nebraska red zone Saturday, culminating with only nine points and two turnovers on downs.

The Nittany Lions’ offense manufactured 501 yards and was an impressive 8-17 on third down.

On Penn State’s first trip into the red zone, Clifford missed a wide open tight end Brenton Strange in the end zone and threw the ball away, setting up a field goal attempt.

Late in the game, Penn State had eight plays inside the ten yard line and was unable to even gain a yard. It is fair to question the play calling, after a run heavy offense got the Nittany Lions into that position, to not run the ball once in those eight plays.

This will ultimately tell the story of this game, in which Penn State scored nine points of a possible 35 on these red zone trips, and fell short at the end.

The Last two plays of the game never had a chance, as Levis took a sack on third down, and was forced to just throw it away as he was in the grasp of a Husker defender on fourth down. It has been a common theme among these first four games, nobody was able to step up and make a big play to save the day.
