No. 1 Penn State wrestling maintained its dominance at the 2026 NCAA Championship. The Nittany Lions, who went undefeated in 2025-26, clinched its fifth consecutive title and 13th team championship in 15 years on Saturday, March 21.
Penn State wrestling is a 'moving target' teams are focused on taking down
The tournament isn't even over. Penn State created such a massive lead that no other program has an opportunity to surpass.
On Saturday morning in Rocket Arena, 133-pound wrestler Marcus Blaze secured the team title in the consolation semifinals. He logged a 20-4 technical fall at 5:45 versus Oklahoma State's Troy Spratley. Blaze is ranked fourth in his weight class behind third-place Aaron Seidal from Virginia Tech.
This made it mathematically impossible for any team to catch up to them. The Nittany Lions have 164.0 points heading into the championship rounds, which is 45 points ahead of second place. The Cowboys, who have 119.0 points, have a 17.5-point lead over third-place Nebraska. Iowa and Ohio State round out the top five.
PJ Duke also wrestled back on Saturday, securing third-place in the 157-pound weight class. Both Duke and Blaxe are true freshmen with impressive starts to their collegiate careers.
The championship matchups are set. Six Penn Staters have a chance to bring home individual titles, setting a new record in program history. The blue and white's current record is five national title holders.
125-pounder No. 1 Luke Lilledahl matches up with Princeton's No. 10 Marc-Anthony McGowan. McGowan is just one of three wrestlers still alive that aren't seeded in the top five.
No. 1 Shayne Van Ness is the next Nittany Lion, facing 149-pounder and 10th-seeded Aden Valencia out of Stanford. In the 197-pound bout, No. 1 Josh Barr wrestled No. 7 Cody Merrill out of Oklahoma State.
Top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink in the 165-pound weight class meets No. 3 Mikey Caliendo out of Iowa. No. 1 Levi Haines also faces off with a third-seeded wrestler, Nebraska's Christopher Minto in the 174-pound weight class. Minnesota's Max McEnelly, another three seed, faces No. 1 Rocco Welsh in the 184-pound bout.
The final matchups are slated to start at 6:30 p.m. ET and can be watched live on ESPN.
