No. 1 Penn State wrestling is in a dynasty era and is on track to winning its fifth consecutive national championship and 13th title under head coach Cael Sanderson. In addition to that, the Nittany Lions are also in good standing to break a record of individual national champions, which is currently five in one season Eight wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of their weight classes.

Penn State wrestling is on track to another record-breaking championship season

Penn State currently leads with 40.5 points as a team, which is 13.5 points above second-place Nebraska. Hoping to also spoil the blue and white's plans on winning its 13th team championship title are Oklahoma State and Ohio State.

"It's just part of the way we’re wired, to chase and pursue. And Penn State has provided something for every Division I program to chase and pursue. And that’s really important," Buckeyes head coach Tom Ryan told Bob flounders of PennLive.

"What’s equally or more important is to make sure that every individual in your organization, every student-athlete is guided in a way to help them achieve the best version of what they’re capable of . . . if that means that we chase down Penn State and beat them at some point, fantastic. If that means it’s not going to happen, that’s the way it goes."

Every team wants to win the national title, which is exactly the point Ryan made. While there's a dominant dynasty to take down, that's what the sport is about and that's why they're competing.

“There’s always going to be obstacles in the way. What are those obstacles going to be?" Cowboys head coach David Taylor said. "They’re going to change. It’s a moving target."

Behind Penn State and Nebraska are Iowa at 25.5 points, Oklahoma State at 25 points, and Ohio State at 23 points. Taylor said leading the Buckeyes is one stop along the way to advancing the program as a whole, whether the 2025-26 season ends in a national title team win or not.

The Nittany Lions are practically unstoppable, at least for this season considering the current top five teams, excluding the blue and white, are fighting for second place. The Cornhuskers have 27 points heading into Friday's quarterfinals. Depending on how the rest of the matches turn out, both Taylor and Ryan have an opportunity to get on Nebraska's heels and slowly build their programs up on the doorstep of Penn State's.
