The Penn State Nittany Lions and head coach Matt Campbell are going toe-to-toe with one of the program's own beloved characters: Bill O'Brien, who is now the head coach of the Boston College Eagles, in the recruitment of Will Wood.
Wood, a three-star quarterback in the class of 2027, has become one of the high-priority targets for the Nittany Lions and their new head coach.
After a nearly hour-long phone call between Campbell and Wood, it became clear that Penn State was trending in the right direction, and they'd have their answer sooner rather than later.
The young quarterback recently said that he was truly down to just two teams: Penn State and Boston College, going as far as to say that he was truly split "50-50" between the two programs.
Will Wood set to pick between Nittany Lion and Eagles
As Campbell and his staff continue to put their chips in Wood's basket, the good news is that he has also shared that he wants to make his decision before summer truly begins.
"Whatever decision Wood makes, he’d like to make soon. He told NSN he wants to decide before the end of May," Joe Smeltzer wrote for Nittany Sports Now.
Wood, a Massachusetts native, could consider the Eagles his hometown team, but has garnered a lot of attention from the Nittany Lions, and has returned that interest, visiting State College on three occasions.
However, even with the May deadline for his commitment, Wood currently has three official visits scheduled for the summer, and none of them are to Penn State.
Will Wood official visit schedule
- Boston College Eagles, June 5
- West Virginia Mountaineers, June 12
- Arkansas Razorbacks, June 19
His official visits are no reason to panic for the Nittany Lions, and Campbell could still schedule an OV for the quarterback. For now, it sounds like Penn State is exactly where he needs to be and could learn if its efforts paid off in just a few weeks.
