Matt Campbell is on the board. In Week 9, coming out of Penn State’s lone bye of the season, the first-year head coach finally notched his first Big Ten victory, downing Purdue 31-17 to get to 4-4 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

While it’s still undeniably a disappointing first season at the helm for Campbell, squandering a favorable schedule, that schedule is still laid out in front of the Nittany Lions with a not-so-inconceivable path to 8-4. The toughest test along that road is likely a Week 10 trip out to Seattle.

Washington has been similarly underwhelming this year, sliding back from No. 17 in the preseason AP Poll, one spot ahead of Penn State, but the Huskies are also riding a bit high in Week 10 after outlasting Nebraska 17-10 in Lincoln with a stellar defensive performance.

It wasn’t so stellar for the offense, but Week 1 starter Demond Williams, who dealt with injuries and was benched for Elijah Brown, provided a second-half spark off the bench and earned the starting job back for Week 10. With Williams at QB and a struggling run game, Washington will have to test a quality Penn State secondary and a defense that’s trending in the right direction as a whole.

Offensively, Penn State looked much better against the Boilermakers, too, but the Huskies will provide a much tougher test for Cam Wallace and the newfound run game. If Wallace can keep rolling, there’s reason to believe that the Nittany Lions could string together a few wins down the stretch, but they still enter Week 10 as a road underdog.
