Penn State's getting whiplash from 4-star QB's mixed signals ahead of commitment

The Nittany Lions don't know where they stand with Peter Bourque as his commitment date approaches by the hour.

Penn State football's four-star quarterback target Peter Bourque is very indecisive on the Nittany Lions. With his commitment date one day away, scheduled for May 14, the blue and white don't have any certainty if they're in or out.

Mid-day on Tuesday, Rivals' Adam Gorney backed out of his expert prediction that he logged, which favored Penn State landing the quarterback. He posted on social media, saying he based his prediction on information told to him a few weeks ago and did not take into consideration the recent flips in Bourque's mind.

This all but officially exiled the Nittany Lions from this recruitment battle, leaving it up to Georgia and Virginia Tech.

Later on Tuesday, Penn State came up from behind in the seemingly two-way race. Now, experts believe it could be a three-way battle for Bourque once again in a matter of hours.

Peter Bourque reportedly puts Penn State back in the mix after Tuesday visits

All three teams sent staff to visit Bourque on Tuesday. Following the visits and watching the quarterback throw, the Nittany Lions' quarterbacks coach, Jake Waters, put Penn State back into consideration, according to Brian Dohn of 247Sports.

With the wishy-washy nature of this recruitment race, head coach Matt Campbell shouldn't get too comfortable on Bourque reportedly putting the blue and white back into the mix. If his mind can switch that easily on the Nittany Lions in a matter of hours, it realistically might still be a Bulldogs vs. Hokies fight come Thursday at 12 p.m. ET. Regardless, one of the three teams in Bourque's final list will earn its first quarterback commit from the Class of 2027.

Despite Bourque being the No. 82 recruit nationally, No. 7 quarterback, and No. 1 recruit from Massachusetts, Campbell and Waters have options — even if it doesn't appear so on paper.

Will Wood, a three-star quarterback from Massachusetts, is the No. 488 recruit nationally, No. 29 quarterback, and No. 3 recruit from the state, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

The battle for Wood is between Penn State and Boston College. So, it's not a guarantee that the Westwood, Mass. native goes with Campbell over an in-state option. Still, the blue and white are favored to land Wood.

Since Bourque is such a question mark, Wood is practically a need for Campbell. Unless the four-star turns around on Thursday and makes a shocking decision based on the week's turn of events, Campbell's last shot at a quarterback is Wood before he has no other choice but to try and flip an already-committed recruit from a different program.

Thursday will be the deciding factor into how many eggs the Nittany Lions put in Wood's basket. At least for one more day, though, Penn State doesn't have to feel like it only has one option either way. After Bourque announces his commitment, and if it doesn't pan out as the Nittany Lions hoped, Campbell and his staff will be tunnel visioned on landing Wood. They won't have any choice but to, actually.
