Quarterback is one of the positions Penn State head coach Matt Campbell has yet to address in his Class of 2027 — and it's one of the positions he must.

On May 11, Rivals/On3 recruiting expert Adam Gorney logged a prediction for where four-star quarterback Peter Bourque will commit.

The Nittany Lions have surged in Rivals' projection percentages, currently holding a 75.9 percent chance at landing Bourque. Gorney favored Penn State in his expert prediction as well, which he logged late on Monday.

Bourque is the No. 7 quarterback in the class who is also ranked No. 82 nationally and No. 1 from Massachusetts, per 247Sports Composite rankings. With no five-star quarterbacks left for Campbell, the Tabor Academy four-star is his best option on paper.

The Nittany Lions also have three-star quarterback Will Wood on their radar. Both Bourque and Wood are from Massachusetts. Wood is ranked the third overall recruit from the state and 28th among quarterbacks in the country.

Rivals expert's latest prediction favors Penn State to land four-star quarterback Peter Bourque

Gorney's prediction comes just a few days before Bourque is slated to announce his decision. He has a scheduled commitment date of Thursday, May 14.

Though he does not have a list of final schools heading into the day, the top options standing out are Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Georgia. All of them are without a quarterback as of Tuesday.

The new prediction seems to favor the Nittany Lions, but Campbell shouldn't be so sure of that. Keegan Pope of On3/Rivals reported that the blue and white might be at the bottom totem pole in the trio.

If Bourque goes with Georgia, this will be the second recruit the Bulldogs stole from Penn State. Earlier in the year, five-star running back Kemon Spell committed to Georgia after dragging the Nittany Lions along and leading them on by hope.

Bourque's decision won't be rash. After decommitting from Michigan, the 2025-26 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year took his time with his second wave of recruitment.

Florida and Miami were two that were in the mix, but after four-star Davin Davidson and four-star Israel Abrams committed to the Gators and Hurricanes, respectively, Bourque's list cut down.

If Penn State goes empty-handed on Thursday, Campbell's last real shot is with Wood. Both Massachusetts quarterbacks are good options, even though Bourque is technically ranked higher.

Campbell's quarterback room currently holds seniors Rocco Becht and Connor Barry, redshirt junior Jack Lambert, redshirt freshman Alex Manske, and freshmen Peyton Falzone and Kase Evans. After 2026, Becht and Barry will not be allowed to return and play at the collegiate level. That means the Nittany Lions must bring in talent to compete with Manske, Falzone, and Evans.

Bourque is the perfect prospect to go head-to-head with them for a starting or backup role spot. Falzone and Evans were previous three-star recruits from the Class of 2026. They were the No. 27 and No. 57 quarterbacks, respectively, as well.

Bourque, who completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards and 18 touchdowns and was named Alpha Dog of the New York Elite 11 in April, can even give Manske consistent competition after the redshirt sophomore finishes his second season under Becht.
