Penn State's 4-star running back miss isn't anything Matt Campbell should worry about

Running back isn't a position room the Nittany Lions are in dire need of boosting with the Class of 2027.

Four-star, Class of 2027 running back David "Tre" Segarra announced his commitment on Tuesday, June 16.

Towards the start of April, Segarra had five finalists in mind: South Carolina, Tennessee, Stanford, Indiana, and Penn State football. AS official visit season neared, he added LSU into the mix and the Tigers ultimately surged to the top and landed him.

Segarra is ranked No. 143 nationally, No. 7 at running back, and No. 3 from South Carolina, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He recorded 174 carries for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2025 as a junior.

While the Nittany Lions were in his original top five, they were clearly at the bottom of Segarra's totem pole. He scheduled official visits with the other four schools, leaving Penn State out of the picture. He took just one unofficial visit back on April 4 during the spring season, but the blue and white never reached the level that the competing programs did.

Segarra pushed up his visit with the Cardinals for May 22-24, leaving space to pencil in LSU over that June 5-7 weekend. That visit, according to The Bengal Tiger, made the Tigers stand out among the rest of his options — including those he didn't have official visits scheduled with, such as the Nittany Lions.

As a result of that weekend, the running back shut down his recruitment, canceled his remaining visits, and his commitment to LSU came soon after.

Four-star David "Tre" Segarra LSU commitment doesn't put a wrench in Matt Campbell's class

With how Segarra's recruitment went, it would have been a miracle for head coach Matt Campbell to land him. However, Segarra was not a must-have recruit for Penn State, so his commitment to LSU isn't affecting Campbell's class at all.

The Nittany Lions have two Class of 2027 running backs committed: four-star Aiden Gibson and three-star Chukwuma Odoh. Gibson is the No. 16 rusher and Odoh is ranked No. 57, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

With these two expected to join Penn State's running back room, Campbell doesn't need to worry about targeting anymore in this cycle.

He has Quinton Martin Jr., Cam Wallace, James Peoples, and D'Antae Sheffey all eligible to return for the 2027 season. Martin Jr. has been on the right trajectory to have more of a consistent role on the field, and Peoples is expected to add significant competition for the RB2 spot in 2026 behind senior Carson Hansen.

This position room, in other words, has stability with those who can return as well as with the additions of Gibson and Odoh. Missing out on Segarra was not only anticipated, but not something Penn State and Campbell had to worry about.
