Penn State football's Class of 2027 is coming together as of the spring with head coach Matt Campbell and his staff leaving lasting impressions on visiting recruits.
On April 10, the Nittany Lions made it into a four-star running back's top five teams, but Campbell must surge past two SEC teams, including one with an in-state advantage, in order to land his commitment.
David "Tre" Segarra, a rusher from Duncan, S.C. announced his top schools on Friday, per Hayes Fawcett of On3: Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Stanford, and Indiana. The Gamecocks and Volunteers currently lead the race for the running back.

Penn State makes top five list of four-star running back David "Tre" Segarra
Segarra is the No. 144 recruit nationally from the Class of 2027, per Rivals Industry Rankings. It also lists him as the No. 5 running back and No. 3 recruit from South Carolina. He is ranked 143rd overall, seventh among rushers, and third from his state, per 247Sports Composite rankings.
In 2025, Segarra registered 174 carries for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns. He added an additional 198 yards and four scores on 19 catches as a junior.
South Carolina has an edge that the other four do not when battling for Segarra's commitment. The in-state advantage pushes the Gamecocks over Tennessee with a 27.3 percent chance of landing his commitment. The Volunteers are second with a 23.9 percent chance.
Segarra also scheduled official visits with all of his top teams except the blue and white. He is expected to visit the Hoosiers first over the weekend of May 15 followed by the Cardinals (June 5), Tennessee (June 12), and South Carolina (June 19). Notre Dame also has an official visit lined up with him over that same weekend as the Gamecocks, but the Fighting Irish may have let Segarra slip through the cracks when landing two running backs: four-star Isaiah rogers and three-star Lathan Whisenton.
As for Penn State, Segarra unofficially visited Happy Valley on April 4. Spring practices continue making an impact on the Class of 2027, causing the Nittany Lions to rise in recruits' rankings as they get closer to making their decisions.
