Penn State football 2027 quarterback commit Will Wood was the recruit head coach Matt Campbell pivoted to once he settled in with the Nittany Lions rather than fight for four-star passer Peter Bourque.
Wood is a three-star prospect who plays for Xaverian Brothers and is ranked 462nd nationally, 30th at quarterback, and fourth among recruits from Massachusetts. In 2025, he led his team to an 11-2 record and its third consecutive state championship. He threw for 345 yards and five touchdowns as a junior.
Now in his senior year, Wood is off to a strong start. Per Tyler Calvaruso of Lions247, the soon-to-be Nittany Lion had a five-touchdown performance (four passing, one rushing) for an overtime win in his senior debut.
His ability to win in big moments is something Andrew Ivins of 247Sports wrote in his scouting report of Wood, and he delivered just that in his first 2026 contest.

Where does Will Wood fit into Penn State's future quarterback room?
Campbell isn't focused on rankings when it comes to recruitment, which was evident when he shifted his attention to Wood over four-star Bourque earlier this year. The question, though, is where does Wood fit into this Penn State quarterback room when he arrives.
After 2026, Alex Manske is next in line to start. He followed Campbell and Co. to Happy Valley from Iowa State after the 2025 season despite knowing he would spend another season in Rocco Becht's shadow. However, Campbell made it known that Manske is his guy and the staff is confident in his playmaking and IQ to take Becht's role after this season.
The quarterback room has a bit more flexibility after this year, too. With Peyton Falzone moving over to tight end, Wood has a clearer pathway to at least a backup role in offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser's offense.
A second-string role as a true freshman isn't a bad start at all to Wood's collegiate career, but is there a true trajectory to him becoming the Nittany Lions' starter? Not really.
Manske is only in year two, and not many quarterbacks want to spend that much time as a backup when there are other opportunities around the country. His commitment to Penn State and Campbell's staff could be very strong, though, so there's a possibility he's willing to ride out that wave.
That all sounds great until four-star quarterback James Armstrong puts on the blue and white jersey. The 2028 commit is already extremely loyal to the Nittany Lions, and Campbell made it clear that Armstrong is the future of Penn State football. So, if Wood puts in the work next season behind Manske, even that won't be enough to secure his role as the next starter with Armstrong coming into that room one year later.
Wood's grit, determination, and ability to make plays is there and how that translates to the NCAA level will be critical in seeing if he can separate himself from the competition coming in behind him. It'll be an interesting competition to see between Wood and Armstrong when that time comes along, and Manske will still be there when it's going on, too.
