Penn State football is closing in on a three-star Class of 2027 cornerback from Texas.

On Wednesday, Dhillon McGee announced his top three schools, with the Nittany Lions making the cut alongside SMU and Texas.

According to Rivals, the Mustangs have the best chance at landing McGee with a 37.8 percent chance. Penn State ranks just behind SMU with a 27.7 percent chance. However, McGee's commitment date scheduled for June 25 gives the Nittany Lions over a month to reclaim the lead in this recruitment battle.

Penn State makes top three on three-star cornerback Dhillon McGee's final list

The Red Oak native is the No. 46 cornerback in the country and the No. 66 recruit in his state, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. The six-foot-one, 175-pound McGee is a multi-sport athlete, also competing in baseball and track at Red Oak.

McGee will take an official visit to State College on June 12, just two weeks before he announces his destination. Penn State hosted him in April for a spring practice unofficial visit. Additionally, McGee had an in-home visit with associate head coach and cornerbacks coach Terry Smith on May 4.

He’ll also visit his other two finalists throughout the month of June, with trips to the Mustangs on June 5 and the Longhorns on June 19 sandwiching his visit to Happy Valley.

McGee also received offers from Michigan, Oklahoma, and USC, among others.

Smith has been active on the recruiting trail so far this cycle. Penn State already holds commitments from four cornerbacks in the Class of 2027. In late March, the blue and white picked up Semajay Robinson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Zachary Gleason Jr. of Pittsburgh, Pa. The duo was joined by fellow three-star prospect Ka’ron Ceaser from Atco, N.J. on April 1. Most recently, four-star Kei’Shjuan Telfair of Euclid, Ohio committed to the Nittany Lions on April 19.

Also in the secondary, the Nittany Lions have a commitment from three-star safety and Montvale, N.J. product Jonathan Galette.

Despite a loaded class in the defensive backfield, head coach Matt Campbell and his staff clearly see a fit for McGee down the line.

“Penn State has been a big one for me. Even when the last staff was recruiting me hard, the love was real, and Coach Campbell and the new staff have kept that same energy,” McGee told Rivals. “I like how direct and consistent they’ve been, really breaking down how I’d be used and developed in their system.”

Penn State will have to beat out two programs in McGee’s home state to bring him into the fold. Luckily, Campbell and the Nittany Lions have already won a battle with an in-state program this week.

The blue and white earned a commitment from four-star running back Aiden Gibson on Tuesday, May 12, reeling in the Woodruff, S.C. native despite an offer from South Carolina. This helped bump Penn State's 2027 recruiting class to No. 7 overall in the country with 16 total commits.
