Penn State football Class of 2027 target Dhillon McGee's commitment date is rapidly approaching. The cornerback is slated to announce his decision on Wednesday, June 24. Throughout official visit season, McGee's top three teams have shared favoritism at some point to land him, but the Nittany Lions have pulled away as his commitment date nears.
SMU and Texas are also in contention to land McGee. Both had official visits with him, sandwiching his Penn State visit, which was June 12-14, and both earned some praise from him following those weekends. However, despite the trio of visits swaying his decision one by one, the cornerback wasn't open about which program was the frontrunner until very recently.
On Monday, June 22, a new expert prediction sent Penn State surging to the top of McGee's ranks. The Mustangs previously held the lead, but the last prediction was logged in May before any of his visits. Now just two days before he announces his decision, the blue and white are projected to land him with an 85.5 percent chance thanks to Rivals' Sam Spiegelman's prediction. SMU dropped way down to a 7.1 percent chance as a result.
New expert prediction favors Penn State to land three-star cornerback Dhillon McGee
While the Longhorns are also in-state for McGee, the Mustangs are just 13 miles away from the cornerback's hometown in DeSoto, Texas. That kept SMU ahead in this recruitment race for quite a bit, but not nixing Penn State due to proximity (or lack thereof) was a great sign for head coach Matt Campbell, associate head coach/cornerbacks coach Terry Smith, and Co.
McGee is ranked No. 43 at cornerback and No. 445 nationally, per Rivals Industry Ranking. He's also the No. 55 recruit from Texas. He recently transferred high schools as well, taking his talents for his last high school season to DeSoto High School. The Eagles are projected to be the No. 1 high school in the country, and a bigger spotlight can boost McGee's value even more this upcoming season.
Adding another cornerback, a talented one at that, is critical for the Nittany Lions.
Semajay Robinson and Zachary Gleason Jr. were previously committed to the program before flipping their commitments to Virginia and West Virginia, respectively. Penn State's cornerback commits went from four down to two, and McGee can make up for lost talent in that regard. Four-star Brandon Sherrard and three-star Kaiden Watkins still have the blue and white in contention, but they're trending towards other programs and the Nittany Lions haven't prioritized them as it's gotten further into June.
Campbell's No. 14-ranked class also needs a little extra juice in general after falling out of the top 10. Class volume isn't cutting it anymore, and Penn State's top targets are slowly coming off the board. While it's still waiting on wide receiver decisions and a few linemen, it has to be able to count on McGee come Wednesday for security.
