October has arrived, and there are seven Big Ten games on the schedule for the Penn State Nittany Lions Field Hockey team between now and the end of the month, beginning with Friday afternoon's road contest against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Penn State (4-4) and Rutgers (5-5) are both 0-1 in Big Ten play thus far, with both teams' losses coming against an undefeated Maryland Terrapins team that ranks No. 2 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
Penn State is seeking their first victory against Rutgers since their 2022 season, which ended with the Big Ten regular season title and a trip to the national semifinals.

And while it's still early, this game might very well go a long way toward deciding whether or not they can end their two-year postseason drought with a Big Ten Tournament berth.
Penn State faces crucial road test against Rutgers
Aside from 10-0 Maryland and Northwestern, it's anybody's guess as to who the next five best teams in the Big Ten are and who will fill out the rest of the Big Ten Tournament bracket once the regular season concludes.
Indiana certainly looks like a contender, given their road victory at Iowa and the fact that they're 6-1 in Big Ten regular season play since starting the 2025 season 0-3.
Iowa's high-powered offense always makes them a threat. Even though their win over Indiana did not qualify as a conference win, the fact that they split the doubleheader means that, like Maryland and Northwestern, they've technically beaten every opponent they've faced thus far. They're fittingly No. 3 in the RPI, behind only those two schools.
That leaves Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, and Michigan State. Michigan State finished last in the Big Ten both 2024 and 2025, despite picking up an upset victory each year, and is currently a distant last in both offensive scoring and defensive scoring in 2026.
While there are no guarantees in the Big Ten, evidenced by Michigan's surprisingly narrow win over the Spartans, Michigan State is one team that the contenders know they need to take care of business against to preserve their position in the standings. Penn State, specifically, knows they can't afford to trip up against the lone team they finished ahead of in each of the past two years.
That leaves us with Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Rutgers as the way-too-early "bubble" teams, and with that in mind, there's little doubt that the result of Friday's game could prove crucial.
Just look back at 2025. There were three losses (Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana) on Penn State's 2025 schedule that, had they flipped, they would have advanced to the Big Ten Tournament. Rutgers was technically the fourth in the regular season finale, although that would have needed to be a regulation win, not an overtime win, due to the Big Ten's complicated tiebreaker process. Penn State battled back to make it a one-goal game after going down by three early, but ultimately fell 4-2.
Penn State vs. Rutgers, 2026 comparison
Rutgers and Penn State have played four common opponents, all ranked opponents, so far this season, and both have lost to all four of them. But Penn State has objectively fared slightly better and made each game more competitive.
Rutgers' loss to Maryland was a 3-0 shutout. Penn State also lost by three, but the score was 1-1 heading into the fourth quarter before a deluge. Penn State lost 2-1 to a Princeton team that beat Rutgers 2-0, and they overcame a 3-0 deficit to Virginia to force overtime en route to a 4-3 loss. Virginia beat Rutgers 2-1 in regulation.
The biggest discrepancy came against Monmouth. Monmouth crushed Rutgers 5-1, while they beat Penn State 2-1. Penn State's average scoring differential of +1.0 per game through eight games is slightly ahead of Rutgers' of +0.8 through 10.
With similar resumes up to this point in the year, it's no surprise that the two schools are neck-and-neck in the RPI, with Rutgers at No. 22 and Penn State at No. 23. Rutgers has the slight edge due to a slightly harder schedule (No. 7 vs. No. 11 in strength of schedule), and they specifically benefit from having a ranked victory, that coming against No. 12 Syracuse in a shootout.
Penn State must overcome first-half woes, avoid early deficit
Penn State has not won a road Big Ten game since 2023, and they have not overcome a deficit to win a road Big Ten game since 2021.
While they have been a second-half team in 2026, with 17 of their 21 goals coming in quarters three and four, they still haven't earned a single comeback win of any kind since 2024. The 2025 season was their first full season without a comeback win since 2015.
They put forth their best first-half effort of the year offensively on Monday against Bucknell, scoring twice before halftime en route to a 3-0 win to double their season-long first-half scoring tally.
But they got a total of 24 shots in that game, and getting 24 shots in a Big Ten game is likely not a luxury they'll be able to count on. It will be important for them to convert on a higher percentage of their opportunities in conference play, especially against teams that will undoubtedly pose tougher challenges for a defense that is still improving. And based on recent history, it will be important to do that early.
A win by no means locks Penn State into the Big Ten Tournament, and with six Big Ten games left on the regular season schedule beyond Friday, a loss by no means eliminates them.
But Friday's game will effectively produce a two-game swing in favor of one of these two teams, and the chance to own the head-to-head tiebreaker over a team that figures to be in the thick of the fight to qualify for the top seven is one the Nittany Lions won't want to pass up in their first season under head coach Hannah Prince.
Friday's game at Rutgers is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. ET, with live coverage set to be provided by B1G+, Big Ten Network's subscription streaming service, from Piscataway. All remaining Big Ten games and Penn State home games on the regular season schedule are set to be shown live on B1G+.
