Penn State football quarterback Rocco Becht transferred from Iowa State after the 2025 season, sticking with his head coach Matt Campbell, offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser, and quarterbacks coach Jake Waters. He came over to Happy Valley as the most experienced quarterback in the NCAA and was part of a 39-player transfer group dedicated to getting the Nittany Lions back into the top tier of college football.

Campbell has raved about Becht before, and while there are still things he has to work on to be a great quarterback in the Big Ten, the staff knows it has a special leader on its team. During a media availability, Campbell was asked what he needs to see from Becht.

The answer was simple: consistency. Campbell said at the end of his response that Becht brings his best out on the field every day at practice. Continuing to refine and improve on his skills while showing up as the exact same person day in and day out is the goal with Becht.

Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht is playing "at an elite clip" and rallying the locker room

"(Becht's) in a completely different space than I've seen him really in his career," Campbell said. "What (Becht) brings to the table is a guy that's already gone through the highs of college football, the lows of college football. He's been in the same system now going into his fifth year, and he's played ... at an elite clip every day.

"He's had great command of situational football, he's had great command of what we're trying to get accomplished offensively. But the biggest thing that a great quarterback does is he leads the team ... If the entire locker room is willing to fight for the quarterback, then you got a pretty special leader on your hands."

Saying Becht is playing at an elite clip every day is a huge compliment coming from the head coach. Campbell added that he doesn't like using the word "flawless," but being pretty close to that description is more than enough for the blue and white undergoing a transition as a team.

In terms of leading the locker room, Campbell commended Becht on his ability to do so earlier in the month too. He told ESPN that his quarterback is an "elite connector," and that's remained consistent and true throughout camp and from program to program.

Campbell can't be the only one pulling the locker room together. Having a leader like Becht that rallies the team behind him is huge from an overall culture standpoint and from a gameday standpoint. Penn State needs to win games, and with the way Becht has played throughout camp and the way the rest of the team is playing for him, the Nittany Lions are prepared to do so heading into the season.
