Culture has been an integral part of Matt Campbell's start as Penn State football's new head coach, and while the roster looks very different thanks to a mass exodus of players as well as a massive influx of transfers, he ensured that the heart and soul of Happy Valley remained the same.
Quarterback Rocco Becht is a huge piece of that. Having an experienced NCAA quarterback out on the field is critical, particularly when trying to reshape a program back to a successful model, but on-field talent doesn't cut it for the Nittany Lions or Campbell.
In 2025, a defeated locker room was the Achilles heel of the team. Former head coach James Franklin allowed one loss turn into two and eventually three before he was fired. It took associate head coach/cornerbacks coach Terry Smith some time to get his first win as interim, but he glued the locker room back together that made that next victory possible regardless of how many more weeks it was.
While Campbell should have no problem stepping into that role, he shouldn't be the only one that can bring a team together. That's why Becht was a crucial grab out of the Transfer Portal.
"For the last four years, everybody in our locker room would have fought for [Becht]," Campbell told ESPN. "[Becht] is an elite connector."

Campbell continued, saying how the transition from Iowa State to Penn State with different names and faces all around, roster and staff alike, could hurt the team's unity. The concept of "playing for each other" has to be rooted in the players on the field. Campbell sets the standard, then it's on the players to embody it.
"[Becht] has done an unbelievable job of working to connect our locker room together," Campbell said.
Becht has played in 42 collegiate games with 39 starts over his four seasons as a Cyclone with Campbell. Excluding the blips in 2025 due to a lingering shoulder injury, he has been consistent in terms of production once he finally stepped into the starting role as a redshirt freshman in 2023.
The results earn respect from his teammates and the ability to bring people together is the leader Penn State needs in the locker room. He has experience in both areas, which should help the Nittany Lions overcome any dips in energy throughout a season where they're fine-tuning things.
It won't look perfect; that's to be expected. Penn State just can't lose its heart, and that's where Becht comes in.
