Penn State football's Class of 2027 wide receiver recruitment hasn't seen linear progression throughout this official visit season.

The Nittany Lions lost four-star Jamir Dean to Georgia after just over one month of being committed to Penn State. Dean pledged to the blue and white on May 1, but his loyalty remained faulty as the Bulldogs almost immediately extended an offer and got an official visit down in the books. The wideout officially flipped his commitment on June 15.

That left the Nittany Lions searching for more stability at that position with their remaining targets. In hopes of landing both four-star wide receivers Khalil Taylor and Deshawn Hall, head coach Matt Campbell has yet to see legitimate movement in their recruitment processes. Taylor recently rescheduled an official visit with Nebraska, though experts still believe Penn State will win this battle.

As for Hall, expert predictions also favored the blue and white to land him following his official visit on June 5-7. This was his second of three official visits. Hall visited Auburn the weekend prior and has Tennessee lined up for the last weekend, June 19-21.

Though the Nittany Lions moved up the ranks after that weekend, the Tigers made a recent surge in his recruitment. Per Rivals predictions, Auburn has a 69.5 percent chance to land Hall and Penn State has a 26.4 percent chance. Chad Simmons and Steve Wiltfong both submitted expert predictions late on Tuesday, June 16 favoring the Tigers.

Hall is ranked No. 189 nationally and No. 28 at wide receiver, according to Rivals Industry Rankings. He's also the No. 9 prospect out of Alabama.

This doesn't mean the Nittany Lions are completely out of the picture. NIL isn't always the selling factor in Happy Valley, but Campbell understands that Hall is practically a must-have recruit.

Penn State's wide receiver room gives Hall some flexibility to compete for a more consistent role very early on in his career.

With redshirt senior Chase Sowell entering his final collegiate season, junior Brett Eskildsen is the only secure wide receiver on the roster. Sophomore Koby Howard saw some time on the field as a freshman, logging seven receptions for 133 yards, but nothing substantial that Campbell can build a wide receiver room on. With the addition of Hall, the Nittany Lions would have a wide receiver who can win contested catches.

There's room for Hall to fit in, and wide receiver coach Kashif Moore made it clear that Hall is a priority in this cycle. Moore had a home visit with the wideout on May 4 with other offensive position coaches and offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser.

The relationships between Hall and the staff as well as the developmental and playing path Moore, Mouser, and Campbell have in mind are significant factors in Penn State's pitch. The question is now if Auburn has a better offer for Hall than Campbell and his Nittany Lions do.
