Latest 3-star tight end commit has full faith that Penn State is Tight End University

The Nittany Lions and Matt Campbell have had seven tight ends drafted since 2015 combined.

Penn State football recently added another tight end to its Class of 2027 with three-star Sean Currie from Lawrenceville, N.J. The rising high school senior announced his commitment on Friday, May 22 and has been all-in on the Nittany Lions since.

When Currie committed, he expressed his excitement to Rivals about playing for a historic program and commented that he's ready to play at Tight End University.

Less than a week following his commitment, Currie spoke with Ryan Snyder of On3/Rivals and doubled down on Penn State being TEU.

"Any school can say they're 'Tight End U,'" Currie told Snyder. "But the numbers don't lie with Penn State."

Looking at both the Nittany Lions' history with tight ends and head coach Matt Campbell's history with tight ends at Iowa State, the TEU identity in Happy Valley is sure to stay alive.

Since 2015, Penn State has had six tight ends drafted, including Mike Gesicki (Round 2 in 2018, No. 42 overall), Pat Freiermuth (Round 2 in 2021, No. 55 overall), Brenton Strange (Round 2 in 2023, No. 61 overall), Theo Johnson (Round 4 in 2024, No. 107 overall), and most recently Tyler Warren (Round 1 in 2025, No. 14 overall).

While only one of Campbell's tight ends from Iowa State has been drafted (Charlie Kolar in Round 4 of the 2022 NFL Draft, No. 128 overall), he's had success with that position room overall.

Benjamin Brahmer and Gabe Burkle, senior and redshirt senior Nittany Lions in 2026, followed Campbell from the Cyclones over to Happy Valley. Brahmer finished the 2025 season with 37 receptions for 446 yards and six touchdowns over 12 games. Burkle caught 26 passes for 302 yards and one score last year as well.

Though he couldn't retain Luke Reynolds, who followed James Franklin to Virginia Tech during Transfer Portal season, Campbell kept Andrew Rappleyea at Penn State. As a redshirt sophomore in 2025, Rappleyea saw much more production, logging 20 catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns.

Between Brahmer, Burkle, and Rappleyea, Campbell has a highly talented tight end room that is sure to pave paths to the NFL drafted or undrafted.

Class of 2027 commits, Currie and four-star Cooper Terwilliger, are confident they can carve a similar path as well with Campbell at Penn State. Terwilliger is the No. 14 tight end in the class and No. 263 overall recruit. Currie is ranked 32nd at tight end and 561st nationally, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

The addition of these two recruits is also huge for the Nittany Lions considering they were forced to continue on without a Class of 2026 tight end due to the abrupt coaching change. With Brahmer and Burkle departing after 2026, the tight end room is down to four players, including Rappleyea. It's not as deep of a room after 2026, making it a perfect development opportunity for Currie and Terwilliger.
