Offensive tackle Drew Shelton started off day three of the NFL Draft for Penn State, being the 112th pick, taken in the fourth round by the Dallas Cowboys. Shelton became a part of what has felt like a recent tradition for the Dallas Cowboys on the third day of the draft.
After hitting the defense hard in the first couple of rounds, which included a top-tier first-round draft night taking safety Caleb Downs out of Ohio State and EDGE rusher Malachi Lawrence out of UCF, the Cowboys are covering their offensive bases.
Drew Shelton might have been drafted to light a fire under Cowboys' Tyler Guyton
FanSided's The Landry Hat expert, Jerry Trotter, was not afraid to call out the Cowboys for taking an offensive line in the same spot they do every season. Trying to protect franchise quarterback Dak Prescott has been somewhat of a battle for the Cowboys in recent years, so the trend of taking offensive linemen on day three is an ongoing project.
Trotter absolutely loves the pick of Shelton out of Penn State, though, feeling this could be putting another sign of Dallas putting tackle Tyler Guyton on notice. Shelton has the ability to play both right and left tackle, which could have been the most intriguing part of his draft profile.
Guyton was drafted with the No. 29 pick in 2024 and has yet to cement himself as the franchise tackle the Cowboys wanted him to be, so it seems Dallas is creating some healthy competition here with Shelton.
"Shelton's got swing tackle versatility, though you'd love to see the Cowboys light a fire under Guyton in training camp by creating a competition between Guyton and Shelton for the starting left tackle job," Trotter said about the Shelton selection.
Now, Shelton probably won't be the starter in Week 1 of the 2026 season, but if he creates enough of a competition with Guyton, he could see the field sooner than expected.
