To say this past weekend was huge for Penn State football recruiting would be an understatement. The Nittany Lions wrapped up the weekend by securing 3 commits on Sunday. OT Deryc Plazz, DT Xavier Gilliam, and ATH Dejuan Lane all made their commitment to Penn State this past weekend.

As this was the first weekend of the official visit season, Penn State also hosted a camp for both committed and non-committed players. This allowed the coaching staff to build those relationships and see who they want to pursue more closely.

The 2024 class now contains 17 hard commits and they currently have the 6th overall class in the country. Where the team needs to focus as the official visit season moves forward is on the offensive side of the ball, specifically at the wide receiver position.

Penn State is yet to receive a commitment from a class of 2024 wide receiver but there is one player in particular who generated significant buzz this past weekend and that is Peter Gonzalez, who attends Central Catholic high school in Pittsburgh, PA.

Over the weekend many videos merged on social media showing current 2024 Penn State QB commit Ethan Grunkemeyer throwing to Gonzalez and also staying after the camp ended to spend some one-on-one time with wide receivers coach Marques Hagans.

From the above video, it’s clear that Coach Franklin has a lot of respect for Gonzalez and it’s great to see Grunkemeyer building chemistry with him at these camps. He has great acceleration from the line of scrimmage and has a great way of going up to the highest point to secure the football.

On May 31st Gonzalez announced that his recruitment was down to 3 schools Penn State, Miami, and Virginia Tech all made the cut.

At this time he does not have a commitment date set, however, with how Penn State has been aggressively attacking the early summer months, I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear a decision made from Gonzalez sooner than later. He will take an official visit to Penn State on June 16th, so that weekend would be one to watch out for.

He is currently listed as a 3-star recruit and he is rated as the 29th-best available player from Pennsylvania per 247sports. According to his recruiting profile, he stands at roughly 6’2 200 lbs and he would be an excellent addition to the 2024 class in my opinion.
