Penn State Football Needs to Capitalize on West Virginia’s Uncertainty
By Andrew Adair
Class of 2023
Penn State Football and West Virginia recruit in the same geographic footprint. Both programs love recruiting in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio. With that overlap, there are going to be some recruiting battles that Penn State loses. With an uncertainty at coach, it gives Penn State a second chance at a few recruits that they missed out on.
One of the bigger surprises to Penn State fans this recruiting cycle was when four-star Rodney Gallagher committed to West Virginia over the Nittany Lions. West Virginia is the hometown school as it is closer to Gallagher than Happy Valley. His recruitment was viewed as a two-team race between the two schools and Penn State can get back into the driver’s seat in Gallagher’s recruitment.
Four-star Linebacker Josiah Trotter was a priority recruit at the position along with Ta’Mere Robinson and Tony Rojas. His recruitment may have been impacted by the change in Defensive Coordinator made during the offseason. The Penn State coaching staff will get a second chance to pitch Trotter, this time with almost a full season of Manny Diaz running the defense. LBU can always use another stud at the position.
Penn State was not involved in the recruitment of Jahiem White initially. Now that the Nittany Lions are surprisingly thin at the position, it wouldn’t be that crazy of an idea to gauge the interest of the three-star Running Back from Pennsylvania. White would provide depth and a developmental pickup for Penn State.
