ATH Rodney Gallagher

With talented quarterback Drew Allar set to take over the Nittany Lions offense next season, the staff is trying to put as much young talent as possible around him.

It seems as though the staff is emphasizing speed with its wide receiver recruits. Three of the four receiver commits in 2022 were clocked at 4.40 speed as is 2023 commit Carmelo Taylor.

Gallagher certainly fits the description of what Penn State is looking for at wide receiver. The Nittany Lions made a strong run at the in-state Gallagher before his commitment to West Virginia. They tried to sell him on being the next Jahan Dotson and that he would be used in a similar way.

Getting Gallagher to flip from West Virginia may be difficult. Despite being from Pennsylvania, Gallagher lives only 20 minutes from West Virginia’s campus. West Virgnia can also sell early playing  time more than Penn State can, especially if Parker Washington and Keandre Lambert-Smith return next season.

What may go in Penn State’s favor is the job security of West Virginia head coach Neal Brown. Through his first three seasons, Brown went just 17-18. This season, West Virginia is 2-3 and is yet to play Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma, Kansas State and Oklahoma State.

If West Virginia has another losing season, it’s unlikely Brown returns as the coach. If there was to be a change, that’s when Penn State would likely make its move and try to get back in with Gallagher.
