Penn State Football: keys to success against the Maryland Terrapins
By Nick Kreiser
Establish a physical running game
Last week, Wisconsin had a ton of success on the ground against this Maryland defense. For the Terrapins, the defensive front seven is one of the great weaknesses of their team, and it showed last week in Madison.
Not long after the Badgers wrapped up a win over Maryland, Penn State would also have a great day running the rock against Indiana.
This week will need to be much of the same: the Nittany Lions running the ball effectively, and the Terps struggling to stop the run.
Kaytron Allen has been his usual self, running hard downhill with great vision and fighting for extra yards.
Nick Singleton has also improved each week at his ability to run downhill between the tackles. He’s had the speed and home run ability all season, but he’s really starting to put it all together and becoming a complete back.
Allen and Singleton make up one of the best running back duos in college football, and Penn State’s ability to run the ball was one of our reasons for optimism against Maryland. Another big week out of the Nittany Lions’ 1-2 punch out of the backfield would go a long was in helping them pick up the win.
If they run the ball hard and often, they can wear down Maryland’s defensive front and this running game could take over the game.
