Big Ten Wrestling Power Rankings: Is it Penn State Wrestling and everyone else?
By Chris Snyder
Dual Rank: NR
Record: 0-0
Ranked Wrestlers: 4
133 No. 9 Rayvon Foley
157 No. 18 Chase Saldate
184 No. 20 Layne Malczewski
197 No. 15 Cam Caffey
The Spartans have yet to compete in a dual meet this season, however they did have a decent showing in the 2022 Michigan State Open. Sparty had 10 grapplers end the tournament with podium finishes and Ceasar Garza took home the only title for MSU in the Freshman/Sophomore division at 174.
This year’s Michigan State squad does have some talent, as evident by their four ranked grapplers. But the reason why the Spartans are still far down on my Big Ten Power Rankings is the same thing which has plagued them each of the last several seasons. And that’s the fact they don’t have much else in their lineup.
Caleb Fish (165) is an up-and-coming Sophomore who’s shown flashes of being highly competitive. However, the Big Ten at 165 is absolutely loaded as there are currently eight wrestlers ranked ahead of Fish. It will be a rough go for Fish to find any footing throughout the season.
Will the talented Rayvon Foley win a plethora of bonus points during the season? Of course.
Will Cam Caffey pull off an upset out of nowhere against a much better opponent? Book it.
But none of this will matter in terms of their standings in the Big Ten because MSU simply has too many holes in their lineup. Especially when compared to the majority of the Big Ten teams.
Next up for Michigan State is an away dual meet against Davidson on November 11th.
