Indiana kicked off the season this past Friday where they dispatched the mighty EIU-Edwardsville wrestling squad 26-15. The Cougars put up quite a fight against the Hoosiers considering the result of last year’s dual meet was a one-sided, laugher 40-3.

Has SIUE improved? Possibly.

But I feel this has more to do with IU’s wrestling team taking several steps back this year. And this is even after the Hoosier’s crowned nine individual champions in the Maryville Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open on November 5th.

Jacob Moran (125), Henry Porter (133), Graham Rooks (149), Danny Sheen (149), Derek Gilcher (157), Magnus Kuokkanen (165), DJ Washington (174), Gabe Sollars (197), and Jacob Kaminski (285) all took home titles in both the Elite and Amateur brackets. Hey, I’ll give IU credit, they competed, and they won but take a look at some of the competition at this tournament:
-Ozarks
-Midland
-McKendree
-Maryville
-UIndy
-Lindenwood
-Quincy
-Little Rock

Not exactly murders row there.

The Hoosiers will next host Princeton on November 18th and it’s very possible they may not win more than two matches. But we shall see.
