Penn State Football: Three takeaways from Drew Allar being named QB2
Trust
Penn State starts the 2022 season on the road at Purdue for a night game.
Purdue is known for its hostile crowds for night games when big-time opponents come to town. Just ask Ohio State back in 2018.
While there is a lot of trust in Sean Clifford to play in environments like this, he’s the only quarterback on the roster that has played in these types of games.
What if, unfortunately, there is a repeat of what happened at Iowa last year where Clifford had to leave with an injury and the offense totally fell apart, in part due to crowd noise.
What naming Drew Allar as the backup for this Big Ten road game says is that the staff trusts him. Even though he is a true freshman and has never taken a snap in a college football game, the staff believes in him enough to get the job done.
That is a great sign for not only this year, but the ones to follow as well. Penn State’s staff thinks Allar is mature enough and good enough to handle this type of situation if it were to occur.
This is an incredibly promising sign for Allar’s future and the team’s future.
