Sean Clifford has received endless criticism over the past two years, and many fans have a pessimistic outlook on the upcoming season as a result of him returning as the starting quarterback.

However, we know that Penn State’s ceiling with Clifford under center is relatively high, and if he can remain healthy this season, they can reach that ceiling.

There are certainly some things that the “oldest man in college football” has to clean up, as his play has been inconsistent at times, but he is certainly capable of leading the Nittany Lions to a successful 2022 season.

Here are three reasons why.

Reason #1 – Sean Clifford’s experience

The importance of experience at the quarterback position cannot be overstated, and Sean Clifford brings plenty of that to the table.

Entering his fourth year as the starter and sixth year overall, Clifford will be making his 34th career start when the Nittany Lions take the field on September 1st.

Fun fact, Ross-Ade Stadium will be the 12th Big Ten stadium he will have started in, with Ryan Field (Northwestern) and Memorial Stadium (Illinois) being the only two he will not have started in.

At this point, there is nothing that an opposing defense can throw at Sean Clifford that he hasn’t already seen, and he won’t be phased by playing in big games and in front of hostile environments.
