Middle Linebacker

Penn State’s linebacking corps won’t be very deep this season, but there is still an intriguing competition between Kobe King and Tyler Elsdon to start at the MIKE.

Elsdon is slightly more experienced and the older of the two, and he got a lot of valuable reps against Arkansas in the Outback Bowl, a game that King did not play in to preserve his redshirt.

However, Elsdon did not participate in the spring scrimmage as a result of an injury. It did not seem serious, as he still suited up, but if he missed out on a lot of reps throughout spring practice because of it, and if it holds him back for part of the summer, that could give the edge to Kobe King.

Regardless of who wins this competition, the Nittany Lions should be in good hands at middle linebacker, but being that it is such an important position, and one that has historically been one of Penn State’s best, this will be a fascinating position battle to watch unfold.
