Penn State Football, and head coach James Franklin, have begun using the transfer portal the past two seasons, but how much does the program rely on it?

Penn State Football has started to accept the transfer portal as a means of improving its roster, but how dire truly is the need for the Nittany Lions to bring in transfers?

Three positions stand out when it comes to who Penn State Football should be targeting in the portal: offensive line, defensive end, and linebacker. All other positions are in a comfortable place, either because of recruiting or the portal, or in some cases both.

These three positions are crucial to Penn State Football’s success going forward. The problem is, so far the transfer portal has not been as abundant at these positions as the staff would have hoped.

Offensive tackle options have been slim, the linebacker options have been even slimmer. There were some options at defensive end, like the Murphy twins from North Texas, but they chose UCLA.

The question then becomes, can Penn State Football live without grabbing a transfer at any of these positions and still feel good about their chances in 2022?

Using a dire level rating of 1-10, we’ll take a look at each of these three positions and see where things stand for Penn State Football
