Penn State Basketball: Where Nebraska blowout ranks in 20 years of bad losses
By Evan Smith
No. 1 December 16, 2006 (BJC): Southeastern Louisiana 69 — Penn State 66
This was an ALL-TIME loss, and one this writer will never forget because the game-winning shot was sunk right in front of my face.
Southeast Louisiana tied the game up at 66 all with just 6 tenths of a second left, all but guaranteeing overtime in the Bryce Jordan Center. And that’s when Penn State did the singularly worst thing possible.
Guard David Jackson tried to throw a full-court pass from under his basket, hoping for a miracle catch and heave in the remaining six tenths of a second. Instead, the pass went untouched by both teams, bouncing out of bounds on the far baseline. Because the ball wasn’t touched, possession was given to SE LA from the INBOUNDING spot, not where the ball went out of bounds.
Still, there was only 0.6 seconds left…and the Lions (of SE LA) found their leading scorer coming off a screen and heaved up a three right from the corner baseline…nothing but net. How Penn State couldn’t cover the Lions leading scorer (who finished with 28 points) was almost as inexpliciable as throwing the inbounds pass out of bounds.
