Penn State Basketball returns to the friendly confines of the Bryce Jordan Center to take on the Michigan Wolverines Tuesday.

Penn State basketball, led by head coach Micah Shrewsberry, and returning starters Seth Lundy and friend of VBR John Harrar (download his app!) welcome the Michigan Wolverines to town Tuesday February 8th (2/8/2022) at 9:00 pm in the Bryce Jordan Center on ESPN 2.

Michigan is the bubbliest of bubble teams, starting the season with massive expectations that have not been met this year.  Michigan (11-9, 5-5) is 8th in the conference and the only name most Nittany Lions fans will recognize is returning starting center Hunter Dickinson.  He is averaging 18.1 points per game and 7.9 rebounds while shooting a respectful 37.9% from three, almost 76% from the stripe, and an absurd 60.3% from the field.

The Nittany Lions (9-10, 4-7) have done a nice job shutting down opposing bigs this year but they’ll have their hands full with Dickinson.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines aren’t a killer team from beyond the arc, averaging just 34.9% from deep, which is likely the main factor as to why the Ann Arbor faithful aren’t thrilled with the performance of this team thus far.

It’s not often Penn State gets the ‘ESPN Treatment’, even on the deuce, and for Penn State to have a decent chance at the NIT, this is a game they have to win.

Looking just up at the Wolverines in the standings but just a half game above Northwestern and a game and a half over Maryland, Penn State has to continue to hold serve at home like they have with wins over Indiana and Iowa.  Coming off an ugly yet heartbreaking loss to Wisconsin, Penn State will have to get off to the rare strong start to win this one.

Penn State Basketball vs Michigan University Prediction

ESPN’s BPI gives Penn State Basketball a 42.1% chance of winning.

Penn State has had numerous close games, many of which they’ve pulled out and almost did it again with a last-second shot by Dread preventing yet another steal at Wisconsin.  If Penn State wants to make the NIT, this is a game a team of that caliber has to win.

But, with Michigan on the NCAA Tournament bubble, they can’t afford a ‘bad loss’ here, even on the road.

Will the real Penn State Basketball please stand up?

It’s just tough to expect this team to perform offensively for more than a few minutes at a time.  Although they’ve played well at home, I can’t see them pulling off another, even in the ‘whiteout’ game.

Prediction: Michigan 72 – Penn State 64
