Penn State Basketrball commit, and son of Nittany Lions head coach Micah Shrewsberry, Braeden Shrewsberry had a big night for the State College Little Lions Friday

Penn State Basketball Class of 2023 commit Braeden Shrewsberry is a star for the State College Little Lions basketball team, and Victory Bell Rings got a firsthand look at him in a MidPenn matchup vs Central Dauphin East Friday night.

Braeden is the son of Penn State Basketball Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry and is a three-star recruit who also held offers from George Washington, Xavier and St. Joseph’s.

While high school statistic keeping can always be iffy, Braeden is listed as averaging 20.8 points, 5.6 points, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals a game for the 6-7 State College Little Lions.

In Friday night’s overtime loss at home vs Central Dauphin East, VBR (after missing the first quarter) had Shrewsberry for 21 points (7-18 from the field, 3-11 from three, 4-5 from the stripe) in 22 minutes and 30 seconds of action (out of a possible 24 minutes).

Shrewsberry also added three rebounds, two assists, two steals, two turnovers, and three fouls.

Braeden is incredibly smooth on the court and makes the game look effortless. At 6-foot-2, he played underneath the basket in the 2-3 zone on defense but handled the ball a TON of offense including running a lot of point guard.  He did get turned over twice while being pressed, but his handles do allow him to get his shot off at will:

The State College Little Lions rely on him heavily on offense as he probably had about half the team’s shots. He definitely forced up some contested threes but also showed that he can make them.

I was a little surprised Shrewsberry didn’t get more rebounds, but that may be more how he’s used within the Little Lions system. Hopefully, as he continues to grow, he’ll add more of that defensive and rebounding aggression since he is likely going to be one of the, if not the most athletic player on most courts he plays on for the next two years.

Even if it wasn’t his best shooting night, without a doubt he made the play of the game.

With State High trailing by two with 8.1 seconds left, he grabbed the rebound off a missed three throw and went coast to coast, scoring as time expired to send the game to overtime.

While State College did lose in overtime, this was an impressive play essentially taking on the entire Central Dauphin East defense to make sure his team would get to overtime.

Also of note in a game with lots of players complaining to the officials, Braeden did not say one word to an official the entire game.  It was very refreshing to see a player get called for a foul and not instantly complain.

It’s gotta be tough having to play with the pressure of being a coach’s son but Braeden clearly understands he’ll be the target for opposing defenses.  I don’t see him getting rattled or frustrated easily, showing some impressive maturity for his age.

Hopefully, Shrewsberry sticks around and we can continue to watch him locally as he looks to continue to improve his game and moves up in the recruit rankings.  We look forward to him trading the maroon and gray for the blue and white in two years in 2023!
