The Penn State Wrestling Team improves to 9-0 on the season after defeating Maryland 46-0 in College Park
The Big Ten regular-season finally kicked off for Penn State Wrestling as the Nittany Lions traveled down to College Park, Maryland to take on the lowly Terrapins Friday evening.
Penn State returned to Happy Valley with an absolutely dominant 46-0 shutout.
Let’s dive into Penn State Wrestling’s big win over Maryland
The dual started out at 125 where highly coveted transfer Drew Hildebrandt made his Penn State debut. But, he wasn’t on the mat very long. Really it was only one minute and 38 seconds to be exact as Hildebrandt locked in a half nelson on his opponent, rolled him over, and earned the fall. The win gave Hildebrandt his first win as a Nittany Lion and it gave Penn State Wrestling a 6-0 lead on the evening.
The blood bath continued for Penn State Wrestling as RBY and Nick Lee each earned technical falls and Beau Bartlett picked up a fall. And after only four matches, the Nittany Lions raced out to a 22-0 lead over the Terrapins.
Then before the intermission, Penn State’s Tony Negron took care of business against his Maryland foe in winning a major decision 11-2. Going into the break the Nittany Lions held a 26-0 lead.
For Negron it was his first Nittany Lion victory and the first victory by any Penn State wrestler at 157 this season. And while Negron has looked competitive and fought hard in every match this season, more fire power is on its way at 157 for Penn State.
Coming out of halftime, Penn State continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal with Creighton Edsall picking up a 7-1 decision and Carter Starocci cruising to an easy 8-3 decision of his own. With three matches remaining on the evening the Nittany Lions were up 32-0.
In perhaps the match of the evening (at least on paper), No. 1 Aaron Brooks squared off against Maryland’s only ranked grappler, No. 12 Kyle Cochran.
But, this is exactly why the matches don’t take place on paper. Instead, they take place on sweat-soaked mats between two supremely fit human beings. And even though this matchup appeared close on paper, it definitely wasn’t close on the mat as Brooks laid waste to Cochran in a 19-7 major decision.
With two matches remaining in the dual Penn State owned a 36-0 lead.
Max Dean and Greg Kerkvliet then capped off the evening in style by each winning via a technical fall.
But let’s just cut to the chase and admit what this dual meet really was. It was simply a nice tune up for the Big Ten regular season. And Penn State certainly flexed their muscles against a vastly overmatched squad.
But it was still fun to watch!
Next up for the Nittany Lions is a home dual against Indiana on January 9th at 2:00pm.
