2022 Heisman front runner Caleb Williams shocked the college football world Monday when he announced he would be entering the transfer portal to talk with other schools

Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams, once a recruiting target of Penn State Football, set the college football world into a frenzy Monday afternoon when he announced he would be entering the transfer portal.

Williams did not rule out returning to Oklahoma, however now quarterback Dillon Gabriel who was in the portal and committed to UCLA has now flipped to Oklahoma, leading many to believe that the Sooners may not like their chances in retaining the star freshman.

The former five star recruit took over the reins for Spencer Rattler this season after conducting a huge comeback against Texas and never looked back. The freshman threw for 1,912 yards and 21 touchdowns while he also ran for 442 yards and six scores.

This has almost certainly peaked the interest of those in the Lasch building, as Williams once had Penn State Football in his top five when he was a high school recruit.

The former five star who ranked as the seventh best player in the nation according to 247Sports hails from the DMV area, a perennial pipeline for Penn State Football recruiting.

His original top five included Penn State Football, Maryland, LSU, Oklahoma and Clemson which he would later wither down to a final three which did not include the Nittany Lions.

With Sean Clifford set to return in 2022 and top ranked quarterback in the ’22 recruiting class Drew Allar coming to campus in January, Penn State Football is in a very good place with their quarterback room, however Williams is the type of talent that every team in the nation should be vying for.

Early buzz seems to be USC, which would make sense as his former coach Lincoln Reilly jettisoned OU for sunny California last month. However, Rivals national columnist Mike Farrell tweets that you have to think Penn State Football will be involved.

Pete Thamel reported earlier on Monday after Williams officially entered his name in the portal that his father said development will be the key deciding factor in where his son ends up, and that he has not yet picked a destination.

"“Professional development. We want Caleb to be ready to play when he becomes a pro. You go to college to get prepared for your career. His chosen career path is professional football. We want him to be prepared for when that time comes,” his father told Yahoo Sports."

Could offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich convince Williams that he can develop him and prepare him for the NFL?

He certainly improved Clifford from 2020 to 2021 and played a deciding factor in getting Allar to sign with the Nittany Lions.

Time will tell as this sage unfolds.
