Takeaways from Penn State Football’s win over Maryland
By Nick Kreiser
Keyvone Lee is currently the best option at running back
Coming into the game against Maryland, Keyvone Lee led the Nittany Lions in yards per carry, with 4.9, which is actually a very respectable mark considering the team’s rushing struggles this year.
Lee is also only one of two Penn State Football running backs who have found the end zone this season.
The sophomore back had another good game in terms of average, finishing with 6.3 yards per carry, as well as having the team’s longest run of the day at 15 yards.
Each of the backs certainly have their weaknesses, but Lee might just be the best bet for this staff for the remainder of the season.
Lee certainly isn’t the fastest back, but he is definitely the most powerful on the team and has the ability to break tackles in the open field. He doesn’t have the great vision and sometimes tries to do too much rather than taking the easy few yards, but the same can be said about all of the backs on the team.
The staff has constantly rotated backs this season and has not given one guy a chance to get into a rhythm. If one guy has a solid drive, someone else is out there at running back the next drive, which doesn’t make sense.
Perhaps the staff should feed Keyvone Lee one game and see if he can get into a rhythm, he could be Penn State Football’s first 100 yard rusher on the season. His running style has the ability to wear down a defense if he keeps coming at them all game long.
Only twice this season has a Penn State running back gotten more than 15 carries in one game. Noah Cain got 20 vs Ball State, and 19 vs Auburn.
The most carries that Lee has gotten in a game has been 10 carries. If Lee could get 15+ carries one week, he could very well could rush for close to 100 yards in one game.
