No. 22

February 13, 2011
Minneapolis, Minn
No. 3 Penn State 18, No. 5 Minnesota 18

Oh, did you expect all of these dual meets to end in a thunderous victory for the Nittany Lions?

Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you.

Prior to this dual meet, do you know the last time Penn State Wrestling ended a regular season dual meet against Minnesota in which the result wasn’t an “L”? We have to go all the way back to February 6, 1998 where Penn State Wrestling was able to topple wrestling giant Minnesota in a tight home meet 21-13.

If you’re counting at home, that’s a full 13 years.

Furthermore, the result marked the first time the Nittany Lions had not lost in Minnesota. Ever.

The dual meet proved to be an evenly matched affair as both teams split the ten matches and each compiled 14 takedowns of their own.

With experienced grapplers Frank Molinaro and Quentin Wright, along with the freshman duo of Ed Ruth and David Taylor anchoring the lineup, Cael Sanderson and company made a statement to the collegiate wrestling world that they were going to be a team to reckon with going forward.
