6. What Does the Secondary Depth Chart Look Like?

This season, the Nittany Lions’ secondary should be anchored by Jaquan Brisker, who is one of the top safeties in the country and a potential All-American. What about the rest of the secondary though?

Well, let’s stay at the safety position for now, and ask ourselves who starts at safety alongside Brisker?

Is it returning team captain Jonathan Sutherland? Ji’Ayir Brown could also be in the mix along with State College native Keaton Ellis, who is moving over to safety from the cornerback position. How comfortable will Ellis be making the switch?

Moving to cornerback, Tariq Castro-Fields and Joey Porter Jr are sure to be the two starters, but what about the guys behind them? True freshman Kalen King, who had turned heads in the spring, will more than likely get his chance to prove himself. Can he live up to the hype he created for himself? Some other guys who will be in the rotation at cornerback is Daequan Hardy, and also South Carolina transfer Johnny Dixon.

The question at cornerback is not so much who will be on the field, as much as it is who will be on the field more often than others. Thankfully, the cornerback position has some pretty good depth heading into the new campaign. The final question mark in the secondary is with Marquis Wilson. Wilson had played cornerback the last two seasons, but, Franklin moved him to the offensive side of the ball to get a look of him at wide receiver in the spring. If Wilson plays on both sides of the ball, that provides even more depth for the cornerback room. Where will he spend most of his time this season?
