Building an elite Penn State football offense

Penn State head coach James Franklin knows that an elite offense is what will lead to a National Championship.

The last two national champions, LSU and Alabama, had prolific offenses that put up points at a historic rate. If Penn State wants to not only make the College Football Playoff but win it, they will have to create their own high-powered offense.

Franklin began laying the groundwork for this offense in the 2021 class with the additions of Tengwall and three four-star wide receivers Liam Clifford, Harrison Wallace, and Lonnie White Jr. While White may up playing baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates, this was still a solid start. Joining them is 3-star quarterback Christian Veilleux and 4-star tight end Khalil Dinkins.

The 2022 class is where things have really picked up. In addition to the offensive line commits mentioned before, the class includes a 4-star quarterback in Drew Allar and a 3-star quarterback in Beau Pribula. Joining them is a group of talented receivers in 4-stars Kaden Saunders, Anthony Ivey, and Mehki Flowers, along with 3-star Tyler Johnson. At tight end, there’s 4-star Jerry Cross and the Nittany Lions have two top ten running backs committed in Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen.

Now, Birchmeier joins the fold in 2023. He’s the type of prospect who could see the field earlier in his career than most offensive linemen, making him a key member of this future offense.

If Penn State can add some of the targets that Birchmeier will be peer recruiting, they’ll be well on their way to having a dominant offense for years to come.
